Upon Meeting Elizabeth Bennet in London

Oh Lizzy dear -- to see you here is grand!
It's been so long; I don't mean to infringe.
Does our old town of Meryton still stand?
The dust from that old place still makes me cringe.

I can't stay long -- I've someone new to meet:
a lady who will soon be here for tea.
Her pleasant talk will surely be a treat
but I've some trepidation as you see.

This woman! She has just secured a groom,
a man whose house in Derbyshire is grand.
    Her recent elevation I assume
resulted from a scheme too often planned.

    This man had been elusive for so long;
    forever keeping vultures far a-face.
I'm sure he tried in vain to shun her song,
but now he's been snapped up in her embrace.

I've heard some things that she would disavow.
Such things I've heard about this lady's youth!
Her machinations are the rumour now.
It's gossip, but in gossip there's some truth.

His name is Darcy -- oh, you look surprised!
You surely haven't met him in your state.
To claim to know him would be ill-advised:
he moves in lofty circles very great.

But Lizzy, did you see that carriage here?
I see the Darcy crest upon its doors.
I wonder if the man himself is near.
What ho! You say that carriage there is yours?
