    Chapter 13

Posted on Thursday, 7 December 2006

When morning dawned, the light broke in through the curtains, causing Liz to stir and blink her eyes. She stretched slightly and noticed instantly that her movement was hampered by a certain weight. Looking down she saw a well-toned arm around her waist and a leg thrown over hers. Smiling, she slowly attempted to move out from under the appendages, only to have them tighten around her, with a muffled "mmnoph," spoken into her hair.

    "Hmm?" she inquired softly.

"Elizshabef ... no..." she heard, muffled again.

Laughing silently, Liz snuggled into Darcy's embrace, then, suddenly remembering the first time she heard those words spoken, tears began to form in her eyes. Recalling Darcy's care of her when she had fallen ill at Pemberley, all those months ago, she was struck with the possibility of Darcy dreaming of her on that day. "Was he imagining this ... hoping for this ... all the while?" She was overcome with a feeling of shame, disappointment in herself, and not least of all, overpowering love for the man holding her. To know that he had loved her all these months, in spite of the way she had treated him in the beginning and what had happened between them since the night of Bingley's party, left her humbled and touched to her core. As she began to weep quietly, Darcy started to wake.

"Elizabeth? Love? What is the matter?"

Turning in his arms, she threw her own around him and held him close. "You're here ... you're mine ... and I'm so sorry..."

"Hush, dearest. There is nothing to be sorry for, remember?" Darcy whispered as he held her tight, stroking her hair. "Oh yes, that's right ... you're crazy. Is this an episode?"

Liz's sniffles turned to outright giggles. Rolling over so that Liz was laying on top, Darcy brushed the tangled curls out of her face and wiped the tears off her cheeks. "Morning, my love.." he said with a tender smile, the love shining in his eyes causing Liz to feel a bit faint.

"Morning..." she said, smiling back, before she lay down, snuggling into his neck. "Do you get room service here? I don't know about you, but I'm starving!"

"You're always starving, Elizabeth. You have a bottomless pit for a stomach ... hmmm, I'm famished myself. Hold on.." he said with a grin, as he began to roll over in the bed several times, holding Liz in his arms so he didn't squash her underneath him. He stopped when he reached the edge of the bed, and freeing one arm from under a giggling Liz, he grabbed the phone off of the side table. "Good morning ... I'm thinking of taking breakfast in my room ... I'd like," he began, and with a look at Liz, said, "I guess you should probably bring up two ... of everything ... extra eggs and sausage .. oh, and toast ... lots of toast...Oh! And a whole pot of coffee ... thank you."

"Hm ... well, you got me covered, what are you going to have?" Liz said with a smirk.

"Well ... I could just have a little of this.." he said, nibbling her neck, "and a little of this..." with a nibble on her ear, "and for dessert..." he finished, giving her a deep, passionate kiss.

    "Oh ... William..." Liz breathed.

"Darcy ... William Darcy," he said, waggling his brows.

"William!" Liz said with a laugh. "How long before breakfast?"

"Hmm ... about thirty minutes ... we have enough time..." he said, trailing kisses down her neck.

"Yes ... we do ... for a shower! You, sir, are quite in need of one ... and I can only imagine the state I'm in..."

"You, my dearest Elizabeth, are utterly beautiful and ravishing ... and you are in the exact state that I've been dreaming about for so long..." he said, his voice thick with emotion as his arms tightened around her again and he rested his forehead against hers.

Liz held her hand to his cheek, and the two lay there for some time, in silent communion. Before they knew it, there was a knock at the door. Darcy said, "In a moment, please," and kissing Liz on the cheek, gently extricated himself from her arms. He strode over to a nearby chair, giving Liz a delightful show, to grab the robes they had tossed there earlier. Throwing one over to Liz, he quickly donned his and walked over to open the door. As Mrs. Reynolds and one of the cooks entered to place the food on a table, Darcy noticed that Liz had disappeared.

"Will that be all, Sir?" Mrs. Reynolds inquired, barely stifling the smile threatening to spread over her face.

"Yes, yes ... this is perfect. Thank you," he said sitting down. As soon as Mrs. Reynolds and the cook vacated the room and shut the door behind them, Darcy leapt up from the chair and walked over to the bathroom door. When he heard a soft, "Come in," in answer to his knock, he opened the door to find Liz attacking her hair with a comb.

"I'm ... ugh ... never going to get this ... ow ... mess straight!"

"Well, like I said before, don't you dare cut it! I love your hair," he said, sticking his fingers in her unruly curls. "When you shower I'll give you some of my conditioner ... I can't wait to smell it on you..."

"You won't join me?" she asked, arching a brow.

    "I ... I want to ... I didn't know if you'd.."

"William ... if you think I'm going to let you out of my sight now, you're even crazier than I am," she said with a gentle smile.

"Oh, Elizabeth," Darcy said, enfolding her in his arms once more. "I don't want you to let me out of your sight ... and I'm not going to let leave my side..."

"Well ... you're going to have to right now ... I smell breakfast!" she said with a laugh as she pulled out of his arms and practically ran to the laden table.

"Rule number one ... never get between Liz and food..." he said chuckling.

"I told you I was starving, William. Now sit down and eat, too. I hate to say this, but you don't look like you've been taking care of yourself at all, lately," she said with a frown.

Sitting down and heaving a sigh, Darcy said, "I know ... I've been running myself into the ground for months now. It was the only way to keep my mind off things ... it worked ... for about five minutes."

"Well, I'm not going to let you neglect yourself ever again. I'll beat you up if you do..." she said, brandishing a fork at him.

A light flared in Darcy's eyes. Liz was held by it for a moment until his soft, "Ever?" caused her to blush and avert her eyes. Darcy just sat with a tender smile on his face as she attacked her eggs, unable to meet his glance.

"Well, after this feast, shall we get cleaned up and face the horde?"

"Well, I'll agree to taking a shower ... or a bath ... but honestly, I don't think I want to leave these rooms for a while ... weeks ... months..." Darcy said with a seductive grin.

Liz blushed to her roots and shook her head. "William ... I don't plan on going anywhere ... but these are our friends ... your guests ... I don't think it would be good to ignore them completely. Especially when they've been so worried about you ... me ... us..."

    "What do you mean?"

"You do realize that they tricked us? Jane, Fitz, and Steve all told me that I had been invited here, and that you knew I was coming up for the weekend."

    "Why didn't anyone say anything?"

"They thought that you'd leave if you knew I was coming," she said, chewing her lip. "That you were still so upset and overcome with guilt that you wouldn't face me at all. And the only reason I came up is because I thought you knew I would be here..."

"Oh..." he said, furrowing his brow. With a firm shake of his head, he said, "No! No more black thoughts ... I want that to be behind us ... not that we forget, but that we forgive, understand, and move on. I don't want to dwell on it anymore ... I've done that too much. And, as far as our scheming friends go ... I'm glad they got you to come, Elizabeth. I couldn't imagine, in my wildest dreams, a better time..." he said, his entire face brightening.

Liz melted under his gaze. Rising from her chair, she walked over and sat on his lap. "I can't either..." she said, and gave him a tender kiss. "But ... right now ... I need a shower! And so do you!" Grabbing his hand, she pulled Darcy up from the chair and dragged him into the bathroom.

"I can't believe this! There's still food on that table!"

"Shush, Mr. Darcy," Liz purred into his ear as she slipped her robe off.

Downstairs, everyone else had gathered in the breakfast room to partake of the huge spread on the buffet table.

"Has anyone seen my brother yet? He's usually the first to rise.." Georgiana asked.

"No ... I haven't ... that is strange," said Fitz.

Steve began to chuckle, then laugh heartily. When he noticed everyone's questioning looks, he said, "Have you noticed anyone else missing?"

"Well ... oh!" Jane said, blushing.

"Someone who would have come running if she even caught a whiff of that coffee..." Steve said, still grinning madly.

Looking around and noticing Jane's red cheeks, Georgie's eyes widened and her mouth fell open in surprise. "You mean ... and my brother ... oh!" she said with a giggle. "Well, its about time if you ask me!"

"You mean, you know that Darcy..."

"Oh, I've known since his birthday party. William may like to think of me as a naive girl, but really ... I am in college..."

Smiling sheepishly, Fitz sat down next to Steve and everyone tucked into their breakfasts. "Well, I must say they must be mightily busy for Liz to miss breakfast..." Steve said in a stage whisper.

"Steve!" Jane said, blushing even more.

"Oh, dear heart, why are you so shocked..." Charles whispered in her ear, causing her to redden to her ear-tips.

"Well, I for one am really happy for them ... and relieved. I thought we might have had to lock them in a broom closet," Fitz managed to mumble around a bit of toast.

"Broom closet ... bedroom ... what's the difference?" Steve asked, waggling his brows.

"Really, Steve..." Georgie said, shaking her head. "I don't think that William is a closet kind of guy...oh! William! Liz! How are you two?" Georgie burst out, hoping they didn't catch the furious blush on her cheeks.

"If anyone here knows about closets, that would be Steve," Liz said with a smirk.

"Lizzykins, don't make me bring out the skeletons in yours..." he said in retort.

Darcy and Liz sat down next to each other and were oblivious to everyone's expectant stares. They looked into each other's eyes over the rims of their coffee mugs.

"Ahem ... so? Anything interesting happen?" Steve drawled.

"You could say that..." Darcy said, grasping Liz's hand. At Georgiana's gasp he finally tore his eyes away from Liz. "What's wrong?'

"Nothing!" she said, beaming. "Everything is finally just right!"

Darcy bowed his head, his cheeks turning pink. "I'll second that!" Fitz declared.

"Well, I think they figured us out..." Liz said dryly.

"As if that were hard..." Steve muttered.

Jane and Charles looked on their sister and friend fondly, Charles taking Jane's hand. "Hopefully everything will be fine, dear heart."

"I know ... it's just so nice to see them both so happy ... finally," Jane said tearfully.

After breakfast, everyone went outside to take in the fresh, spring air. Laughing like he never had before, Darcy chased Liz through the garden, catching up to her with long strides and spinning her in a circle. His mirth was contagious, and soon Liz, and everyone else was laughing as well. Putting her down on her feet, Darcy grabbed her hand and pulled her towards the stables.

"Anyone interested in a ride? It's a perfect day for it."

"Oh! I'd love to! I haven't been riding in ages! Not since i was last here..." Liz exclaimed, her smile faltering for a moment. Stopping, Darcy turned to her in concern.

"Dearest ... remember. That is all in the past ... let go."

"I know ... I just ... I'm just so angry at myself for hurting you so, William. I overreacted so badly..."

"Elizabeth," he said, lifting her chin so he could look her in the eyes, "I have nothing to forgive you for. I mean that..."

Smiling hesitantly up at him, Liz took a deep breath and squared her shoulders. "That's my Elizabeth ... come on!"

The party entered the stables, and as soon as everyone was ready, they went for a ride around the estate. Darcy had great pride in pointing out various aspects and things to Liz, he enjoyed being able to share his home with the woman he loved, finally at his side. Everyone enjoyed the brief ride, but it began to get colder near noon, so they returned to the stables.

"Great! Now I smell like horse!" Liz said under her breath.

"Well ... that just means we get to try out the bathtub sooner than expected," Darcy whispered in her ear.

    "You are incorrigible!"

    "And you love it!"

"I love you," Liz said, reaching out to brush a curl from his forehead.

"Oh! Will you two get a room!" Steve said, laughing.

"Great idea!" Darcy quipped, and with a quick movement, had Liz thrown over his shoulder before she could stop him. "See you later!" he laughed as he bounded up the stairs and disappeared into the house.

"Nice ... now we're never going to see them again," Georgie said, smacking Steve on the arm.

Snickering, the group entered the house and split up as everyone went to clean up as well.

Sometime later, Darcy and Liz were lounging on the balcony, wrapped up in a blanket. "So, when am I going to meet the famous Mr. Bennet? I've spoken to him a few times ... he was helping us with the Wickham matter, did I ever tell you that?"

"No ... you didn't, but he told me about all that..." Liz said softly. "I wished that I had heard it from you, first."

"I know, dearest ... but you weren't returning any of my calls, then."

"I know ... I'm sorry. Dad told me that you told him everything ... even about Mr. Pink.."

"That was kind of ... odd ... but somehow it seemed right. If anyone could give me insight on how to handle things with you...it would have been him. I don't think I could have talked to Steve right then about things ... "

"Seemed right?" Liz asked, confused. "How so?"

"Well, when I was talking to him during the Wickham fiasco, I realized that he could be very fair-minded ... about pretty much anything. And some of the things he said ... the way he said them ... well, it reminded me of my own father. I felt really comfortable talking to your Dad."

"He really is a great man ... if a little droll at times."

"And I've already met Lydia and your mother ... sort of..."

"I never got to apologize for that," Liz said, biting her lip. "I'm so sorry they barged in on us like that! I was so embarrassed ... especially for you."

"Well ... its not like I've never heard those comments before..." Darcy said dryly. "Don't fret, Elizabeth ... it didn't bother me ... well, getting interrupted did ... I was about to tell you everything right then."

"I realize that now ... and that's why I'm still upset about that night. That and the fact that at times, my mother seems to have no respect for me."

Darcy just held Liz in his arms and kissed her cheek. He didn't feel it was right to say what he wanted to in response. "Well, your mother couldn't barge in on you here...No ... its too soon. As wonderful, perfect, and amazing as it would be ... its too soon to ask her to stay ... for good."

After a moment, he asked, "And Mary? I would like to meet her, and the Gardiners. You've said such nice things about them. And see Kitty again..." he ended softly.

"I'm sure Kitty would love to see her 'savior'! It's a good thing she has a boyfriend, or I'd probably have to beat her off of you with a stick," she said chuckling, which had the intended effect of lightening Darcy's mood.

"Well, I will be seeing everyone at the wedding, won't I?"

"Yes ... you'll be drowning in Bennets, I dare say."

Smiling, Darcy said, "And I'll have my dance with the maid of honor?"

"Yes you will, best man of mine," she said, kissing him on the chin. "Oh...I hope I don't faint at the sight of you in a tux!"

"You've seen me in a tuxedo before, Elizabeth," he said, nuzzling her hair.

"And I'm surprised you didn't notice me turning into a complete puddle! You really have no idea just how handsome you are, William Darcy."

Blushing, Darcy said, "And you have no idea how gorgeous you are, my Elizabeth. Inside and out..."

"Why Mr. Pink, are you trying to rack up points with all of this flattery?"

"It's not flattery if it's the truth, my dearest Dark Maiden," he said, his eyes flashing.

"I love you, my Mr. Pink ... my William," she said, holding his face in her hands.

"I love you too, crazy woman," he said with a smirk.

Rolling her eyes, Liz stood up and went back inside. Darcy rose and followed her.

    "What is it?"

    "Hmmm? Oh ... nothing."

"Elizabeth ... will you please ... trust me, with whatever's on your mind?"

Turning to face him, Liz studied his face. Taking a deep breath, she said, "I do trust you, William ... its just ... well, where do we go from here?"

"What do you mean?" he asked, walking over and taking her hands in his.

"Well ... we haven't had a normal ... courtship, I guess you could call it. I guess I don't know what to expect ... I don't know what to expect, anyway ... its been a while since I've had any kind of relationship..." she said softly.

"Elizabeth ... I know its been difficult getting to this point ... but we're here now ... together. I guessed that you haven't had a relationship in a while ... I haven't either ... so I don't really have any expectations aside from I want to see you as often as you'll allow me to, I hope that you'll continue to be my friend and talk to and confide in me as best as you can, and I hope that you'll love me and allow me to love you."

Tears rolling down her cheeks, Liz flung herself into his arms. "Oh ... I love you! So very much! Thank you ... thank you, William!"

    "For what, my love?"

"For being you, for saying the right things ... for loving me!"

"I feel as if I was born to love you Elizabeth!" he said into her ear.

"I don't want to be apart from you ever again ... I don't think I could bear to be after everything."

His heart pounding in his chest, Darcy pulled back from Liz and looked deeply into her eyes. "I thought it was too soon ... far too soon ... but Elizabeth ... would you ... do you think that you'd live with me?"

Laughing and crying out "Yes!" Liz threw her arms around him again.

"Well ... I think this is cause for celebration...tonight? Dinner and dancing by candlelight ... definitely my place...by any chance you didn't bring anything slinky to wear in that steamer trunk you call a suitcase?"

"Actually ... I did," she said, chuckling. "Always come prepared!"

"Were you prepared for this?" he asked, dipping his head for another kiss.

"No..." Liz answered after she regained her breath.

"Good ... surprises are a good thing sometimes..." he said grabbing Liz's hand to pull her down on the couch with him. Once he had her settled on his lap, he asked, "So ... how are we going to go about this? When do you think you'll be ready to move in?"

"Oh ... I," she began, furrowing her brow. "I think I could be ready to move out in a couple of weeks...I don't have a lease on the place. I guess I'll just have to find someplace to take my furniture, since I doubt you have room for it."

"You'd be surprised...my apartment in the city is pretty spartan."

"Really? How long have you and Georgie ... oh! What about Georgiana? Isn't this going to upset her? Having me move in? You should ask her..."

"Not a problem, my love. In fact, several months ago, she was haranguing me about getting a 'roommate' so she'd have someone to girl-talk with on holidays," he said, blushing.

"Well, having four sisters, 'girl-talk' is something I've come to specialize in," Liz said with a kiss on Darcy's cheek. "And, I just realized ... I've never seen your apartment!"

"You haven't seen any of them, sorry to say. Don't worry, we'll get around to that. I'd love to show you all of our places. 'Ours'.." he said with a smile. "I love the sound of that."

"Any of them? How many do you have?"

"We have ... well, the one in New York, a condo in L.A., a little place in Tokyo, one in London, beach house in Hawaii, apartment in Berlin, townhouse in Aspen, and ... I think I have a condo in Key West..."

Liz just stared at him openmouthed. "Do you actually live in these places?"

"The places in L.A., Tokyo, London, and Berlin are mostly for business. I used to spend more time away for business ... the other places are vacation homes that have been in the family for a while. Haven't used some of them for years, though ... haven't had a reason to...until now," he said, waggling his brows. "Georgie's used them more often, though. She likes to ski during the season, and I think she takes friends down to the Key West place during spring break."

"Well ... during ski season my family and I usually go upstate ... rent a cabin. Oh ... you know that already. Did I tell you who I met when I was there this last time? A hideous toad of a man, Bill Collins. He told me that you and Anne were going to get married.. As well as informed us of some of your Aunt's glorious wisdom," she said with a shudder.

"Oh, L*rd! You met Collins? I'm so sorry ... he's my Aunt's assistant ... one of them ... something. I met him once at an event she held for the brokerage ... he wouldn't leave Georgie or I alone ... kept following us around all night."

"Assistant? He told my mother he was an executive."

"No ... most definitely not. But if he was, that could explain why the brokerage isn't doing too well right now."

"It isn't? I haven't heard anything about that."

"Its something my Aunt doesn't let out, and its one of the main reasons why she's been so obsessed with getting Anne married. She stands to inherit everything as it was her father's business, Catherine just has the run of things til Anne's thirtieth birthday. But Anne, in her great wisdom, chose to waste her years at college, and Catherine ran the business into the ground. Took too much capital out for frivolous things. If Anne married well, they could try to revitalize the business, or let it go ... as Anne and Catherine would be set up for life then."

"How did you find all of this out?"

"My company ended up doing a investigation on them after I broke up with Anne. Fitz insisted on it."

"I can't believe she's related to you ... ugh ... suddenly my mother doesn't look so bad," Liz said with a grimace.

Darcy chuckled and said, "I think the very same thing all the time. You should meet my uncle ... I haven't seen him much since my parents died, but he really is a great guy. My Aunt Lauren, as well..."

"Well, with a son like Fitz, they'd have to be either really nice or completely insane. Oh, I probably shouldn't joke about that, I haven't met them."

"Its fine, I'm sure they'd say they were insane for having a son like Fitz, too," he said with a grin. "They're all coming to the wedding, did you know?"

    "Really?"

"They've known Charles almost as long as Fitz and I have, and they're friends with the Bingleys."

    "Even Caroline?"

    "Er ... I don't think so."

"I kind of feel sorry for her in a way ... she doesn't seem to have any real friends."

"Well, maybe she would if she tried to be more of a real person. The entire time I've known her, she's been obsessed with wealth, fashion, and who was 'who' in society. It's the only reason why she was interested in me, at all."

"Oh, I don't think so ... didn't I tell you that you were unbelievably handsome? Even a gold-digger like Caroline, especially one obsessed with beautiful things, would appreciate that."

"Liz," he said, rolling his eyes. "And if you want to talk about being obsessed with beautiful things ... I think I'm quite guilty of that, myself," he said, nuzzling her neck.

"So ... about this dinner," Liz began, then was interrupted by her stomach rumbling loudly.

"Ah! The beast of the bottomless pit has spoken! Oh! Fearsome one ... we shall feed you! We shall find a worthy sacrifice!" he said to her mid-section, causing Liz to giggle and swat his arm.

"You better appease the beast soon, William! I'm starving..."

"*Sigh*, alright. I'll give a call down to the kitchens and you go change. I'll be here ... waiting for you in an hour."

"An hour? I'll eat the furniture before that!"

"Get!" he said pointing to the door and laughing. Liz got up and glared at him before retiring to her own room to shower and change. Almost as soon as she had left, Darcy leapt up and ran to the phone to give instructions to the kitchen, and to have Mrs. Reynolds pass their apologies on to the rest of the guests. Feeling a moment of guilt for abandoning his friends, he shook himself and went to the bathroom to clean up.

A while later, freshly shaved and clean, Darcy went into his huge closet to pick out something to wear. Rifling through dozens of suits, he finally came upon one he deemed worthy of the evening, and after dressing, walked over to a wooden panel on the wall. Sliding it away, he revealed the safe behind it. After opening the safe, he perused the shelves for a while until he found a small box hidden in the back. Cursing as he had to bend nearly in half to reach it, he grasped the box and drew it out, closing and locking the safe before setting the box down on his dresser. Taking a deep breath, he opened it and looked in awe upon the sparking ring within.

Darcy stood there for a moment until he heard a knock at his door. Snapping the box shut, he stuffed it in his pocket and went to open the door for the staff waiting on the other side. The kitchen staff quietly set up the table and arranged the meal for the evening, chilled the wine, then began bringing in flowers of all types (with plenty of orchids) and lighting candles. When they were finished, they all gave Darcy wide grins and left just as quietly as they entered. Shaking his head, Darcy paced around his room, nervously awaiting another knock.

"Oh, Lizzykins! I can't believe he's asked you to move in with him! Be still, my heart!" Steve exclaimed as he helped her with her makeup. Liz was very happy she had ran to Steve and Fitz's room as soon as she had got out of her shower. She wanted this to be a special evening, and thought she needed all the help she could get to look her best.

"And now you're getting all romantic on me..."

"Liz, honey ... seriously. I think its great. Yes, it is a little fast, but he's loved you for so long. This is serious for him, he's not asking lightly. And if you don't want to go that fast, that's fine ... just tell him, he'll understand. But I think you should go for it. I think you two would be great together ... I couldn't be happier for you, Liz, really."

"Thanks, Steve. That means a lot. I was thinking I was going crazy ... all of this happened so fast, it made my head spin."

"Are you sure that's what made your head spin? It wasn't the intense..."

    "Steve!" Liz said, blushing.

"What! Anyone can tell a mile away what you've been doing all..."

"Steve..." Liz said, flashing him a glare. "Now, what shall we do with my hair?"

"Updo all the way. Here ... give me that clip. So, spill girl ... does he really look as good as I think he does?"

"Steve ... this is my cousin you're talking about..." Fitz said with a pout.

"Jealous, hon?" he said with a smirk.

"No..." Fitz said, turning his back on a giggling Liz and Steve.

"I am not going to answer that, Steve. Oh ... I have no idea why I feel so nervous! Its not like this is our first date ... or I'm sixteen anymore ... but that's what it feels like."

"Well, in a way it is your first date. That dinner you had was somewhat awkward, and it got interrupted. And its been months since then. This time its just you and him, dinner in front of the fire ... probably dancing ... romance..." Steve drifted off with a dreamy look on his face. Liz stole a glance at him and stifled a laugh.

"Hm? Oh, sorry ... well, I don't think you should have anything to be nervous about. You're going to knock his socks off ... probably literally, the way you two..."

    "Steve...please," Liz shouted, furiously blushing.

"Sorry, hon ... I'm just happy for you. Forgive me if I tease you mercilessly...isn't that what adopted brothers and annoying best friends are for?"

"I thought you were supposed to be supportive and give advice."

"Being supportive is what bras were made for, and my advice is you forget to wear one tonight," he said, waggling his brows.

"You are...so..." Liz said, snorting in laughter.

    "Obnoxious, twisted, base..." Fitz muttered.

"Oh, but you still love me..." Steve shot back.

"Yes I do, but that doesn't mean I have to always appreciate your crass sense of humor."

"Well, I think that ... wait ... what did you say?" Steve asked, his eyes widening.

    "Er ... I said..."

"That's my cue ... thanks for the help boys," Liz said smiling and she rose and left the room hurriedly. Padding down the hall barefoot, she walked up to Darcy's door, slipped her shoes on and knocked.

After what seemed to be an eternity, there was a soft knock at the door. Darcy's heart was leaping out of his chest as he smoothed his clothing, ran a hand through his hair, and nearly ran to the door. He took a steadying breath and opened it.

Liz stood on the other side, hand raised to knock again. She was momentarily startled by the door being opened so quickly, and she looked at Darcy in surprise, that instantly faded to a look of tenderness, and appreciation. She ran her eyes over his tall, lean frame, taking in how marvelously he fit the cut of his suit. "Suit? No ... that's a tux ... in fact, that's the same tux he wore the night of his party! Oh ... my..." she mused as her heart beat faster.

"Madame, please come in," he said with a bow. Reaching out to take her hand in his, he bent low to whisper, "You look ... beautiful, Elizabeth." He let his eyes feast on Liz in her midnight blue, satin gown. It was very simple, yet very elegant, and flowed over her curves like ocean waves at night. Her hair was done up in a simple twist, leaving her neck bare, and allowing the crystals in her necklace to send sparkles in the air. "This is going to be tough..." Darcy mused, his eyes focusing on her neck and bare shoulders.

He led her over to the table and helped her with her chair. Liz remarked that he was just as chivalrous as ever, causing him to smirk as he opened the bottle of chilled white wine.

"I believe I've said that only sparkling wines are fit for sparkling ladies?"

"Why yes, I recall something like that," she said with a blush as she took a glass and raised it to her lips. "Although I do have to say that I like hearing it again. Flatter away, Mr. Pink."

"Oh, but my Dark Maiden, how many times are you going to make me say that its not flattery if it's the truth? And you went to Harvard..." he said with a smirk.

"I'm not listening to you, anymore..." she said, tilting her chin up before turning her attention to the plates before her. "Mmmm ... smells delicious!"

"Yes it does. Let's see ... we have filet mignon wrapped in bacon and crushed herbs, mixed green salad in vinaigrette, a vegetable soup, and dessert ... is a secret for now."

"I am going to have to go back to the dojo if I continue to eat like this!"

"You always eat like that..." Darcy said with some confusion.

"Not such rich food ... you're ruining my girlish figure with this filet."

"Then don't eat it," he retorted, quirking a brow.

"William Darcy, I think the crazy has rubbed off on you."

"I'm not crazy ... I'm a Bad Mutha..." he said, managing to keep a straight face.

    "That's certainly romantic talk..."

"I aim to please, my lady," Darcy said, bowing his head.

The two quieted and ate their meal, sending glances at one another over the rims of their wineglasses. When Liz had finished her salad, Darcy asked, "Ready for dessert, my love?"

"Of course I am ... where is it?"

"Come with me..." he said, rising from his chair and extending a hand. Liz smiled and took his offered hand, following him over to sit on a couch in front of the fireplace. "Now, close your eyes..." he instructed. She closed her eyes and sat there impatiently, he chin tilted upwards and a smile curving her lips. Darcy couldn't help himself, and bent to kiss her softly and tenderly for a while. Pulling back, he said, "Keep them closed now ... here, my love.."

Liz felt something being placed against her lips. Tentatively opening them, she felt Darcy slide something cool onto her tongue with a fork. Tasting for a moment, her eyes flew open as she savored the amazing flavors.

"Oh my ... what is it?"

"Mrs. Reynolds' famous turtle cheesecake. Want another bite?"

"Yes, please!" she said laughing. Darcy put a bit of the cheesecake on his finger, and had Liz lick it off. His eyes began to darken, and the next time he put a dollop of the dessert on his finger, he slowly smeared it on her lips. Smiling seductively, he bent down and licked it off, turning it into a passionate kiss. When he pulled away, Liz was breathing heavily, her eyes full of passion.

Taking both of her hands in his, he pulled her up from the couch and led her to the balcony. It was a clear, starlit night, and the balcony was drenched in candlelight. "Oh, its so beautiful, William. Thank you," she murmured.

"It is all for you, my love," he said, wrapping her in his arms.

Softly behind them, music began wafting from hidden speakers. Arching a brow when she recognized the tune, she smiled and nodded when Darcy asked, "Would you like to dance, my love? A tango?"

Their dance was more sensual than their last. Their bodies moved in unison, their eyes meeting as well as their lips. When it was over, they just clung to each other, breathing in the moment.

A moment later, Darcy raised his hand to cup her cheek, gently. Tracing the soft curves of her face with his fingertips, he brushed them along her jaw, down her neck and shoulder, the back up to lift her chin so that he could look in her eyes.

"Elizabeth ... my love ... my dearest, Elizabeth ... I..." he began, faltering.

    "Yes, William?" she asked, concerned.

"I love you. Completely, utterly, eternally ... you fulfill me in a way I never thought possible. It made me happier than you'll ever know when you said that you'd move in with me ... to have you by my side everyday ... it's a dream come true. But I'm sorry ... it isn't enough.."

"What? What's wrong?" she asked, beginning to feel panic.

"It isn't enough...not only do I want you by my side everyday ... I need you ... I need you beside me everyday ... forever. Elizabeth Rowan Bennet ... will you marry me?" he said, looking deeply into her eyes, all the love within him shining through.

"Oh..." Liz said in barely a whisper. Averting her eyes, she swallowed and tried to take a deep breath. Darcy stopped breathing as he felt her pulling away. He stood there mutely, hand hanging limply at his sides, trying to keep the tears in check as he watched her stand there, chewing on her lip.

"Did he really just ask me to marry him? This is crazy ... its so soon! But ... it feels so right. I can't imagine spending another day without him now that we're together ... I love him ... so much ... I..."

Darcy closed his eyes and turned to face the balcony. He rested his clinched fists upon the railing and tried vainly to control himself. He didn't hear Liz saying his name, and he flinched slightly when he felt her touch his shoulder.

    "William?"

Steeling himself, he turned to face her, the lines of his face stretched taut.

"William ... I ... I would love to marry you. I can't think of anything else that would make me happier than to be your wife. Yes, my love ... yes!" she said, tears streaming down her cheeks, her face glowing as she smiled up at him with a dazzling smile.

Darcy stood there in shock. He had swung from one end of the emotional pendulum to the other in moments. He blinked, shook his head, and inelegantly stammered, "W ... what? Say that again, Elizabeth!"

"Yes, William, yes. I will be your wife."

He nearly lunged at her and wrapped her in a fierce embrace. He kissed her face over and over and ended up seizing her lips in an intense kiss that tapered off into one of infinite tenderness. Pulling back, he looked deep into her eyes, tears silently coursing down his cheeks.

"Oh, my love. You have just made me the happiest man in the world. Thank you," he breathed.

    "William? Are you alright?"

    "I ... I'm sorry ... I felt you pull away and I thought ... I thought that you'd reject me..."

"Oh ... my love, no. I was just taken by surprise is all ... I needed a moment to think ... but only a moment. I love you and I can't think of anything I want more than to spend my life with you."

"Oh, Elizabeth!" he said, and bending on one knee, he reached into his pocket and pulled out the small box he had removed from the safe. He opened it, and removed the glittering ring that was inside. Taking her left hand, he placed the ring on her finger and kissed it gently.

Liz's eyes widened when she saw the huge diamond he had placed on her finger. There was a large, emerald cut stone in the center, with three smaller diamonds on either side. The setting was exquisite, and somewhat antique. She stood there and looked at it in awe, causing Darcy to smile.

"It was my grandmother's, and my mother kept it for me to give to the woman I was going to spend my life with. It is finally where it belongs after so many years, my love."

As he stood, he swept her up into his arms and returned to his bedroom. He set her down gently, with her back to him so he could deposit kisses on her neck. He laid his hands on her shoulders, his fingers sliding under the straps of her dress.

    "William..." Liz breathed.

    "Yes, my most beloved Elizabeth?"

    "Yes..."

Turning her in his arms, he took her face in his hands and kissed her deeply. His hands drifted down her neck to her shoulders, and continued down her arms, taking the straps of her dress with them. As the midnight-blue silk pooled around her feet, he picked her up and laid her upon his bed.

"Yes, Elizabeth ... now and forever..."

    Chapter 15

Posted on Thursday, 21 December 2006

Sunday morning dawned brightly. Liz was once again awoken by the sunlight flickering across her eyelids. Stretching, she sat up and noticed Darcy sitting on the edge of the bed, looking on her with a soft smile.

    "Morning, my love."

"Morning ... mmmm ... I could get used to waking up like this," she said, smiling back at him.

"Good, because its going to happen very frequently from now on! Here, I brought you breakfast," he said, grabbing a tray and settling it on her lap.

"There isn't much here..." Liz said, frowning at the small plate of eggs.

"You're welcome ... and that's just to tide you over until you get dressed and we go downstairs," he said with a smirk.

"Thank you ... sorry, I thought that you not-so-subtly telling me you think I eat too much..." she said with a pout.

"Elizabeth... you're healthy and extremely beautiful ... don't let anyone or society tell you any differently. I like people with healthy appetites ... but I will confess one thing ... what seems to be healthy for you would kill a normal person," he chuckled.

"Normal? What is that supposed to mean?" she cried, preparing to launch a pillow at him.

Leaning forward quickly to kiss her on the cheek, he got to his feet quickly and headed towards the bathroom. "Hurry up, love. We've got to meet everyone downstairs. You're right ... we have been neglecting our friends ... and, I think we have some news to tell them..." he said, waggling his brows.

Liz smiled, ate the last of her eggs and followed Darcy into the bathroom. After they had showered and dressed, Darcy led her down the hallway towards the stairs, pointing out and describing the artwork and portraits on the walls, the view from a particular window, an ancient tapestry, and other things that he was fond of.

"So, most of these were shipped over from the Darcy estate in England?" Liz asked amazed.

"Yes, the original Pemberley was gutted in the war. Horrible pity too, it was magnificent. I've seen the photographs. After the house was gone, I guess the family just sold the land and saved what they could, moving it all here. This house was built along the same lines as the original."

"I still can't believe all that history was lost. Your family had that estate for centuries!"

"I know ... it is a great loss ... then again, things are sometimes reborn from the ashes. Many things were saved, including almost everything from the library and attics, and the money from the land revitalized the family, and we were able to take the company into the future."

"I still can't really fathom anything like that ... I don't think we know our ancestors past my great-grandparents. I know the family's from somewhere in England ... Longbourn ... something like that, but I don't know the history."

"Most people in America don't. They come over here to leave their previous lives behind, and that's what happens. I think my family kept it all intact because they were nobility, an ancient family of the landed gentry, and the last move over here happened only sixty or so years ago."

"Nobility? Really? So, am I engaged to an Earl or something?"

    "Technically ... er..."

"You've got to be kidding!" Liz cried.

"Well, the title is hereditary ... and because of it, I actually have dual citizenship."

    "Oh, L*rd!"

"Yes?" he said with a cheeky grin. "I am Lord Darcy, Earl of Blakewell."

Liz laughed heartily, its echoing ring causing Darcy to laugh as well.

"I am serious!" he said between chuckles.

"I know ... its just ... odd! I'm engaged to royalty! Am I going to have to learn how to curtsey and bow and all that?"

"Well ... there isn't much call for me to go over to London much for events other than business. I daresay that you won't have to go before the Queen very often."

Liz just shook her head. "Anything else you'd like to tell me? Twin brother... own a country ... your father was Elvis ... anything?"

"No ... that's it..." he said with a smile.

"Good ... just so you know ... I won't drink tea or wear funny hats!"

"Noted. So, are we going to breakfast, or what?"

"You're the one who started the history lesson, I've been ready."

The two walked downstairs and entered the breakfast room arm-in-arm. Everyone was already seated and Liz glared at Steve when he smirked at her and waggled his eyebrows in greeting.

"Steve ... I'm having a wonderful day, don't make me hit you before noon."

"So, how is everyone?" Darcy asked as he sat down with a full plate for Liz and himself.

"We've been fine, thanks for noticing..." Fitz retorted.

    "Er..."

"Don't listen to him, brother... everyone has been fine, really," Georgie piped in.

"We've been quite spoiled by Mrs. Reynolds so we've barely missed you two," Bingley said with a grin.

Darcy blushed a bit and reached over to take Liz's hand. "We've got an announcement we'd like to make."

"Oh, we know... you guys are going to move in together..."Steve drawled.

"Really? Oh, I'm so happy!" Georgie said as she clapped her hands.

"Well, there is that..." Liz said with a grin.

"And ... there is also the fact that we're engaged," Darcy finished.

    "What!!" Steve shouted.

Georgie and Jane sat with their mouths agape in surprise. Bingley leapt from his chair and went over to pump Darcy's free hand.

    "We're engaged," Liz repeated shyly.

"I ... er ... boy do you two work fast!" Steve chuckled.

"Yes ... that is a little fast..." Fitz said pensively.

"It does seem to be the work of a moment ... but believe me, this has been on my mind for months ... ever since I brought out grandmother's ring from the safe-deposit box before Bingley's birthday."

"Really?" Liz said with a whisper.

"Yes ... really," Darcy said, raising her hand to kiss her fingers.

"I'm finally going to have a sister! Woo hoo!" Georgie cried, running over to hug her brother and Liz.

Jane got up and went to her sister's side. In a low voice so that only Liz could hear, she asked, "Lizzy, are you sure this is what you want? Are you sure you're not rushing things?"

"Jane ... dear Jane. I know we just got together, but I've never felt anything to be more right in my life. He completes me in a way I never thought possible! This is perfect, Jane," she replied in a whisper.

"I just want you to be happy, Lizzy ... and I'm happy for you."

"I daresay we're going to be even happier than you and Charles!"

    "Hmmm ... equally happy, maybe?"

"Fine ... I'll concede that ... just this once," Liz said with a giggle, which tapered off as she began to look pensive.

    "Liz? What is it?"

"Mom ... oh L*rd! How can I get her to keep this quiet? You know as soon as she finds out I'm engaged to the "World's Most Eligible Bachelor", she's going to be boasting about it through a megaphone!"

"Well ... I'm sure she'll just be happy for you, Lizzy. Her heart's in the right place and she just wants what's best for us."

"If she really wanted what was best for us, she'd not embarrass us all the time."

"Well, you will make her day when you let her plan your wedding."

"Mom is not going to plan my wedding! William and I haven't even discussed that point yet, but I would prefer something very small, very quiet...with only family and close friends. I think he'd agree with me on that too."

"You're not going to let her take part?" Jane asked, astonished.

"It's our wedding, Jane ... not hers. Besides, after seeing the insanity she's whipped up around your wedding, I'm not inclined to have her pick out one flower ... in fact, I'm inclined to not even say a word about the engagement. She can find out at the wedding..."

"She'll be upset. She'll feel left out, Lizzy."

"She'll have to get over it. I'm standing firm on this."

Jane shook her head, then switched topics, "So, you two are moving in together as well? How soon?"

"I think it can be accomplished within a couple of weeks. Faster, probably, as I think William will no doubt hire an army of movers! I'm so glad that Georgie's looking forward to it. I was worried that she'd feel imposed upon."

"She's a dear, sweet girl. I think she'll look forward to having another woman in the house when she's home. It seems like she spends most of her time at school now, at any rate."

"But she'll be home for holidays and breaks ... and it is her home too."

"Do you think you'll be able to deal living with housekeepers and servants? Its quite a change.."

"He doesn't have anyone but a person who comes by and cleans the apartment in the city... I think he has staff here because ... well ... look around! No one can take care of this place by themselves! And Mrs. Reynolds and Mr. Weston are like family to William and Georgie. I think I shall do just fine ... as long as no one keeps me from trying to do things myself," she said with a chuckle.

Jane and Liz sat there talking softly as Fitz motioned to Darcy to follow him over to the buffet table. When they were alone, Fitz asked in a whisper, "Are you sure you know what you're doing?"

    "Hmm?"

"Do you know what you're doing ... getting married? Just want to make sure you know what you're getting into here, old man."

"I do know what I'm doing, Fitz. Nothing has ever felt so right before, and I've been thinking about this for some time now."

"I know ... just making sure, Cuz. I'm happy for you ... Liz is a great person and I'm sure you two will be very happy."

"I will be. So ... are you going to be my best man?"

"Of course I will! When is the wedding?"

"We haven't talked about it yet. I was thinking about June..."

"That's not a lot of time to prepare..."

"I know, plus Liz is moving in. I don't want to have anything be rushed, but I can't wait to marry her. I'll get married in Vegas by a flying Elvis if I have to."

"Something tells me that Liz wouldn't like that too much. I've got to know her pretty well over the past few months, and she's a romantic sort of girl."

"I know she is. You're right ... she deserves the best of everything. I really do plan on spoiling her rotten!" Darcy said with a smile.

"I know you will ... you're a romantic fool too."

Darcy turned and went back to his seat next to Liz. He leaned over and kissed her cheek, causing her to blush, before tucking into his breakfast.

The rest of the day was spent in jovial comradery, as the friends went for walks through the garden and grounds, followed by a light dinner, before everyone packed up and prepared to drive back to the city. Darcy and Liz stood on the front steps saying their good-byes as the sky began to turn a dusky rose.

"So...are you coming over tomorrow or should I go over to your place?" he asked.

"Well, if I'm going to be moving in a couple of weeks, you should probably come over to mine...help me pack," Liz replied with an arch smile.

"Sounds good to me. We can even pick up where we left off last time I was there..."

"Should I invite my mother over then?" she asked, giggling.

"Most certainly not. You take delight in vexing me..."

"That's what I'm here for! Well, Steve and Fitz look impatient, I guess I should get heading back. I'm going to miss you..."

"Me too, dearest," he said softly, kissing the top of her head. "I have become quite accustomed to having you within arm's reach, I don't know if I'm going to get any sleep tonight."

"I'm sure you will, because I won't be there elbowing you in the ribs in my sleep."

"True ... well, off you go, Elizabeth. I'll see you tomorrow."

"Tomorrow ... good-bye," she said softly, nuzzling his neck as she tightened her embrace. After Steve honked the Subaru's horn for the third time, the couple finally let go of each other, and Darcy helped Liz get into her car.

As they were driving away, Steve kept poking Liz in her side. "Will you stop that! It tickles!"

"I know it does... calm down, Lizzykins or you're going to go off the road."

"Then stop poking me. What are you, a five year old?"

"Sometimes..." they heard Fitz mumble from the back seat.

"I'm sorry, hon ... I'm just so happy for you I'm giddy! I can't believe my little Lizzykins is getting married! You have to let me do the wedding!"

"As I told Jane earlier, we haven't even discussed it yet. I'd prefer something really small, yet subtly elegant. Do you think you could pull that off, or should I expect pink feathers and everyone in vinyl?"

"I am hurt, Lizzy ... to think that I even have it in me to stoop that low!"

"Just kidding, hon, and you know it. Although ... I do have a question for you."

    "Hmmm?"

"Would you like to be my 'Man of Honor'?"

"Wha ... what? Wouldn't you rather have Jane?"

"Oh, she'll be my Matron of Honor... but I want my best friend next to me up there..."

"Liz ... I'm touched, really. Sure thing, hon ... you can count on me. Just don't make me wear one of those horrible bridesmaid dresses!"

"I don't even want to picture you in drag or I'll go off the road on purpose.."

"What? I've got nice legs, I should show them off in some slinky little number. Oh, can I borrow that red dress of yours?"

"Steve..." Fitz began, chuckling, "the day I see you trying to fit into one of Liz's dresses is the day I become a Hare-krishna."

"Well, shave your head and start handing out flowers, hon, 'cause I'm going to look smashing!"

"Steve, really! There's no way you could fit into anything of mine, and I'm never going to let you try!"

"Oh, alright. I guess I'm just going to have to look utterly devastating in a tux at your wedding. I'll be the best looking bridesman ever!"

"Probably one of the only ones, ever, so that won't be too hard..." Fitz said.

"Well, I could never understand why people seem to only have women for the bride's attendants and men for the groom's. Many people have siblings or friends of the other sex, why wouldn't you have them stand up with you? Why sit and try to pick out your third cousin, twice removed so you'd have enough people? Seems silly to me."

"I never thought about it like that. But, at least you won't have mismatched pairs... I've been asked to be Darcy's Best Man."

    "That's great!" Steve yelled happily.

"I can't wait to see the wedding photos!" Liz laughed.

The three friends were busy coming up with ideas and things to do for the wedding, joking about the bachelorette parties, and teasing each other on their way back to the city. It was quite late when everyone got home, so Liz changed quickly and went to bed; a smile on her face and clutching a t-shirt of Darcy's that she had "borrowed" the day before.

The next morning, Liz woke up late and ran around trying to get ready on time. She made her way to her building and ran past her assistant into her office. She had her briefcase open and was rifling through papers as Mina entered with a mug of coffee.

"Late night? You're usually not running behind, even on Mondays?" Mina asked with a smile.

"Got back into town late and got a late start because of it. Oh! Thank you, my caffeine supply is low...I need that.." she said, reaching out for the mug. At her assistant's loud gasp, Liz looked up surprised.

"Something wrong, Mina? What is it?"

Mina stood there openmouthed. Slowly, she reached out a hand and pointed to Liz's finger. "L*rd, that's gorgeous! Oh my ... is it ... are you..?" she stammered, a hopeful look in her tearing eyes.

Liz looked at the ring on her left hand and smiled tenderly. "Yes, Mina. I got engaged."

Liz was startled and jumped a step back at Mina's loud 'Whoop!'.

"Shhhhh ... I don't want everyone to know!," Liz said chuckling.

    "Who is it?"

"William Darcy. Shhhhhh!" she said when she saw Mina's mouth open for another screech of jubilation. "Keep it down. I want this kept as quiet as possible."

"Why on earth would you want to keep the fact that you're going to marry one of the hottest guys on the planet quiet?" Mina asked, astonished.

"Because he's also one of the guys most hounded by media in the country, Mina. I would rather this not be made too public yet. Let me bask in the glow of the engagement for a while before I'm basking in the light of flashbulbs."

"Oh, I didn't think of that. I won't say a word, Liz, except... congratulations! I'm very happy for you... and jealous! He's sooooooo good looking!"

"Don't have to remind me of that!" Liz said laughing. "But, more importantly, he's also the best man I've ever known," she said with a dreamy look on her face.

"Well, now...I should get going and leave you to swoon, ... I mean work!" Mina said with a laugh as she closed the office door behind her.

Liz did have a hard time focusing on anything at work that day. The light from her window kept hitting her ring, sending rainbow sparkles on her walls that she watched as they danced.

    Chapter 16

Posted on Sunday, 7 January 2007

Later that day, as Liz was leaving her office building, she was interrupted in her walk to the parking garage by the appearance of a sleek jaguar pulling up to the curb. Smiling, she leaned down and looked in the passenger side window at her fiancé behind the wheel.

"Get in, Elizabeth," he said with a huge grin.

"You're not going to open the door for me? Where'd the chivalrous knight go?"

"It wouldn't be very chivalrous for me to get taken out by oncoming traffic, now would it?"

"I guess not. And I probably would get strange looks for introducing my fiancé, the bloodstain," she said chuckling. "But...just so you know ... I like the charming knight routine, so you better keep it up and not get lazy!"

"As madam wishes," he said, taking her hand and kissing it, before driving off.

"So, are we off to my place?"

"Well, I thought that this would be a perfect time for you to see our place, dearest Elizabeth. You said that it wouldn't take you long to move in, but I want you to look around and see if there are any changes you'd like to make, see if your furniture is going to fit... and if not, make plans to go shopping for some ... maybe we'll get a decorator."

"A decorator? I don't think that will be necessary. I doubt that there's anything I'm going to need to, or even want to change."

"Are you sure? I want you to be comfortable there ... I want it to be your home, Elizabeth."

"I will be with you, William ... it will be home."

Darcy's face was split in two by his grin. "You have no idea how much that means to me, Elizabeth. I can't wait to have you by my side ... every day ... every night..."

"Well, I'm not going to be 'by your side' constantly, William." At his perplexed and slightly hurt look, she continued, "We both work ... and I'm sure there's going to be some times when we just want to be by ourselves. That's normal and healthy ... and, of course, there are going to be the times when you lock yourself in a room to escape my mother and sisters, while leaving me trapped behind ... like an animal ... unable to chew off my own limb to get free."

"They can't be that bad, darling..."

"Oh ... you'll be surprised. Don't get me wrong, I do love my family, but Mom ... well ... there's a reason why they named a hurricane 'Frances'."

"Well, you've met my Aunt Catherine...she can't be as bad as her!"

"No ... she's not that bad, thank G*d!" Liz said chuckling. "And I have to admit that my youngest sister have calmed down a bit in the last few months ... I proud of them."

"They're getting through the most trying age ... believe me, even Georgie was a handful at times during those years. And I've always liked Jane ... surely Mary has her good points too."

"Mary was always too studious for her own good. She lived in and through her books, not bothering to take her nose out of them and experience real life in the real world. She seems to be getting better too, not as preachy as she used to be."

    "Preachy?"

"She got into a lot of self-help books and Christian lectures when she was in high school. Now, I have nothing against either, really, but she took it way too far. Everything out of her mouth was either some psychobabble or a moralistic lecture. Not quite family dinner table conversation."

"Well, the conversation around my table growing up probably wasn't all that great, either. Nothing like business to spoil an appetite."

"What do you and Georgie talk about then?"

"Mostly her school and classes. She can go on and on about something she's interested it, which seems odd to most people considering how little she speaks at times."

"She's just shy ... I've never had a problem talking to her."

"That's because she's always liked you ... most people you can't get her to say two words to. I know she's really excited about having you move in ... she kept me up late last night talking about it. And then the wedding! I think she was actually bouncing in her seat she was so happy."

"Oh... that makes me so glad! I was worried how she'd adjust to everything."

"She only has a few friends, and even though she loves Mrs. Reynolds, I think she really misses Mom a lot ... having another woman around. She's really happy she's finally getting a sister."

"She's getting five, actually," Liz said with a smirk.

"True ... I wonder how she'll get along with Mary, Kitty, and Lydia. Might be just the thing for her to be around more girls closer to her own age."

"That would be an interesting thing to see, at any rate. I'm sure Lydia will talk her ear off."

"Well, maybe next weekend we can get everyone together. Have a family dinner over at the apartment." When he noticed Liz's drawn and pensive look, he asked, "What is it? Is something wrong?"

"Well, to be honest I was thinking about not telling my family about the move or the engagement for a while. I don't think I could withstand my Mom's enthusiasm over everything, and I want to shield you from that for as long as possible."

"Well, I don't know your mother, Liz, but I think she'll be more upset if you keep it from her. And, since they're going to be my family too, I think I should get to know them."

"I know ... I know. But let me get settled in first, before we unleash the Bennets."

"Will do, darling. Here we are!" Darcy said as he pulled up to a curb and stopped. Liz had not been paying attention to where they were going, so she was surprised when they pulled up to what was one of the most expensive and desirable addresses on Fifth Avenue, the Stanhope. Darcy put the car into gear and got out to open her door, waving off the doorman who was approaching.

"Here we are, madam," Darcy said, bowing gallantly and kissing her fingers.

"That's better," Liz said softly with a smile.

As a valet got behind the wheel of Darcy's jaguar and began to drive off, Darcy turned to the doorman. "Hello, Samuels! How are you this evening?"

"Very well, Mr. Darcy," Samuels said with a large grin. "Looking forward to a fine meal tonight, the Mrs. is making her specialty!"

"Oh! And I bet you're not going to save me any! See if I ever tip you again!" he said with a laugh.

"Sorry, but that's the way its going to be. You know I can't resist her lasagna!"

"No sane man could! Samuels, let me introduce you to my fiancé, Elizabeth Bennet," he said with a huge, dimple-producing grin.

"Ms. Bennet, pleased to meet you," Samuels said with a small bow. "I've heard that you'll be gracing us with a more permanent presence shortly."

Liz chuckled and stuck out her hand. "I guess that's one way of putting it," she laughed as she shook hands with the friendly man.

"I look forward to having you here. If there's anything that you need, anything at all, don't hesitate to ask. The building is fully staffed as well, and we'll all be happy to help you with everything."

"I hope it doesn't come to that! I'm quite used to doing for myself... although I might need a map to get around this place so I don't get lost."

Samuels smiled at Liz's open and unpretentious manner. "She's not like the woman Mr. Darcy was dating years ago ... nor is she like his friend Bingley's sister ... thank G*d. This girl is like a fresh breeze ... and look at the man! He's grinning his fool head off. Oh, I like this Miss Bennet very much!"

"Well, I'll see what I can do about that! Welcome to The Stanhope, Ms. Bennet!"

"Thank you, Samuels, I feel very welcome now, indeed."

Darcy led Liz through the door and escorted her to the elevator, nodding to the concierge on his way. As they got in, he hit the button and waited for the elevator doors to close. Liz looked over at the panel, and had to stifle a chuckle when she realized he had hit the button for the penthouse.

When the elevator stopped and the doors opened, Liz stepped out hesitantly. She looked around, chewing her lip.

"Come on, let me show you around. Here's the Drawing Room," he said after leading her down a hallway," and through here is the Dining Room." Liz looked around in awe at the spacious rooms. The two rooms together were almost as big as her entire apartment. "And this is the family room ... this is the kitchen ... probably where you'll be spending most of your time," he said with a chuckle, causing Liz to flash him a glare. They walked past the elevator doors again and headed to the other end of the penthouse. "This is Georgie's room, this is Mrs. Reynold's room, when she comes down here ... through the gallery are the guest rooms. And this.. this is my favorite room," he said, opening a set of double doors.

"Ah, the library ... I should have guessed," Liz said with a smile. She looked around at all the books with a smile, then stopped when she noticed the state-of-the-art computer set up at a large desk. "I see that you were serious when you said you were a bit of a geek ... that's quite impressive."

"Built it myself, thank you very much. I may even let you use it, from time to time ... but only if you're on your best behavior."

"Best behavior? From me? You've got to be joking," she said with a wry grin. Looking around once more, she asked, "So ... where do you sleep? Not on a sofa..."

Laughing, Darcy took her hand and led her to a staircase. After going up the flight of stairs, he opened the double doors at the landing. "Not a sofa ... something much better. Welcome to our room, dearest Elizabeth."

"Room...? Don't you mean 'rooms'? This place is huge!"

"Its suitable..." he said with a smile as he showed her the master bedroom, master bath, secondary bath, wet bar area, dressing rooms, and sitting room. Off the sitting room was a set of double, glass doors that led out to a terrace.

Liz sat down on a chair on the terrace and looked around. Noticing her somewhat bewildered look, Darcy sat next to her and took her hand in his. "Everything alright, darling?"

"Hmm? Oh, yes ... its just ... well, this place is about five times the size of mine. I'm not used to living like this ... its going to take a bit of time to adjust to it, I think."

"It's just an apartment, Elizabeth ... you'll be fine."

    "Oh, you're right. I'm being silly, aren't I?"

"You're being adorable. So, what do you think? I told you it was pretty spartan here, think your furniture will fit?"

"Most of it, yes. You have a somewhat eclectic style here, I must say."

"Some of the antiques from the original Pemberley ended up here, mixed in with the modern stuff. I kind of like the contrast."

"I like it too... its interesting, and you seemed to pick the right things. I must applaud your taste, Mr. Darcy."

"I must applaud it too, Elizabeth..." he said, leaning forward to kiss her. They left the terrace and walked around the penthouse once more, so Liz could get a better idea of what to bring over from her apartment. Darcy picked up the phone and rang the front desk so that his car could be brought around to the front. "Shall we be off?"

"Off? Oh, to my place. Sure ... and we could stop and get something to eat, as well. I'm starving."

Darcy just smiled and led her to the elevators. Waving to Samuels as they drove off, they made their way to Liz's neighborhood. After parking the car, they went up to her apartment. Liz looked around her place and chuckled at the difference between it and the penthouse. "I know I'm being silly ... but I still think I'm going to get lost in that place!" Shall we order in, or should I get changed to go out?"

"We can order in ... and get started on organizing things, if you'd like. Or ... we can just relax, watch a movie and make out like teenagers," he said, waggling his brows.

"Well, if those are my choices..." she said with a smile. "Just let me get changed, I'll be right back. Oh! There's some menus by the phone, why don't you order some Chinese or something?"

Liz went and changed out of her work clothes. She came back to the living room wearing sweatpants and Darcy's t-shirt.

"Hey! I wondered where that went."

"I'm sorry ... I'll give it back to you, but I found that I couldn't bear the thought of sleeping alone without something of yours nearby," she said sheepishly.

"Oh, so you take something of mine and leave me empty-handed? That's not fair," he said with a chuckle. "I'll just have to make sure I take something with me tonight, to even the score," Darcy said, grabbing Liz around the waist and pulling her onto his lap.

"William ... as tempting as that sounds, I don't think it's a good idea. I have work in the morning and I'm not familiar with your place yet, or how long it takes to get from there to my office. I think we should hold off on my staying over there until the weekend, so I can get acclimated a bit."

"You're right ... so what am I supposed to do until then?" he asked pouting.

"Oh, you can handle it. Besides, I'll actually have time to get some packing done."

Dinner arrived shortly thereafter, and hours later, Darcy carried a sleeping Liz off to her bed. She had fallen asleep on his shoulder while they were watching a movie. He tucked her in with a smile on his face, left her a note on her pillow, and made his way back to the penthouse, satisfied that he would not have to spend more than a handful of nights without her.

The week passed by quickly with Darcy helping Liz organize and pack up her things. They began taking a few boxes over to the penthouse everyday, and had contacted a moving company to start bringing over the furniture the following week. Darcy actually had a great time while packing; every interesting object, every book, every photo he helped store away came with a story, allowing him to get to know more about the woman he had fallen in love with. In turn, Darcy would show Liz more of the penthouse, telling her about photos, albums, the things in the library that his parents had given him. As a surprise, he was having a guestroom converted to an office for Liz's use, and he had already moved most of her books and photos in there.

Liz's first weekend staying at the penthouse allowed her to become more comfortable with the place, and gave her a chance to become more acquainted with the huge jacuzzi tub in the master bathroom.

After two weeks, Liz was fully moved in. She still felt slightly dizzy from the whirlwind she had been swept up in since the weekend at Pemberley, but she had never felt so complete and happy in her life.

Darcy looked around at the penthouse with a small smile on his face. The furniture from Liz's apartment blended in seamlessly, her photos and artwork filling in gaps on the walls that weren't obvious before. The penthouse felt more like a home than ever before. The sense of emptiness was gone; within and without.

Saturday morning as Liz and Darcy were having breakfast, Darcy noticed an ad in the paper. He skimmed it quickly, then folded the paper and looked at Liz with a furrowed brow.

    "What's wrong?"

"Hmm? Nothing, I just got an idea ... you know how you've wanted a cat ... and I've wanted a cat ... well, they're having a huge adoption push down at the ASPCA today. Want to go down and bring one home?"

"Are you sure you want to get just one? Even though we're both here now, we both work... I think it would be lonely during the day."

"Fine ... we'll get two ... 'his' and 'hers'," he said with a laugh.

A while later, at the shelter, they walked and inspected the rows of cages, hand in hand.

"Oh! I like her ... look at her coat!"

"This one looks like he needs a home..."

"Can I help you with anything?" a shelter worker inquired.

"Well, we're looking for a cat ... two cats, actually. Ones that need a home and would, preferably, get along ... and are neutered."

"All of our animals are spayed or neutered. Well, I think these two should suit you just fine," she said, indicating a cage with a huge, scruffy-looking marmalade tabby, and a petite, gray, tiger-striped tabby. "They were rescued together and have been inseparable since. It would be traumatic to split them up, so they'd have to go to a home together."

Looking at each other with a smile full of tenderness, Liz and Darcy nodded.

The worker opened up the cage, and before she could reach in, the marmalade tabby leapt into Darcy's arms. He settled himself comfortably, and began to purr ... well, rumble actually.

As Liz reached in to pick up the much smaller tiger, she laughingly said, "Well ... who picked who!"

"I guess! Hello ... you're a big fellow, aren't you?" In reply, the cat emitted the deepest, basso "Mrrowr."

Darcy and Liz broke out laughing. "With a build and a voice like that, he can have only one name!" In answer to Darcy's silent query, Liz cried, "Arnold Schwarzikitty!"

"He looks like an Arnold," Darcy said, stroking the cat's ears. "How about it, 'Mouse-inator'? You like 'Arnold'?" Darcy received a rub against his hand in reply. "And what about you, little girl?" he asked, peering at the shy female in Liz's arms.

"I think I'll name her 'Sarah', in keeping with the theme," Liz said, scratching the cat's chin.

Chuckling, Darcy said, in his best Terminator voice, "Ah-nold ... Sarah Connor ... come with me if you want to live..."

"William, really. You are such a geek sometimes! And this is a no-kill shelter, anyway."

Still chuckling, he followed Liz out to the entrance way, where he paid the adoption fee and filled out some paperwork. When he turned over a check, the attendant opened her mouth to say something, then quickly closed it when she saw the name on the check.

"How much did you make that out for? The adoption fee was only $50."

"O.k., so I added a few zeros," he said.

"Good man, Mr. Darcy," Liz said with a smile. As they turned to leave, a woman came running up to them.

"Mr. Darcy? Hello, I'm Dr. Moyens, director of the facility. I was wondering, o.k., fine ... it's a shameful plug, I know, but I was hoping that you would allow us to take your and your new family's photograph for our wall and our website. It does help the shelter ... many celebrities that have come in or have adopted pets have their photographs taken, and we've seen such a dramatic rise in animals finding new homes since we've begun posting the pictures. We've had quite a few people in here saying that they were going to a breeder to buy a dog, but when they saw Mel Gibson holding a cat or Oprah with a mixed-breed terrier, they came down here, instead."

"I would be happy to help, thank you for asking," he said graciously. Following Dr. Moyens to a corner of the entry way, he turned and motioned Liz to follow. Quirking her brow at him, she hurried over to his side.

    "I don't think they'd want my picture."

"Elizabeth ... she said 'my new family'... that includes you ... as well as the fuzzballs here."

Smiling at him tenderly, she stood by his side as he wrapped an arm around her shoulder, keeping Arnold tucked in the other. Liz leaned into him, as Sarah leaned into her. The foursome had their picture taken, all of them purring.
