    The author of these notes believes it was customary in the British Army for the officer sent to deliver dispatches to be rewarded with a promotion, and it was thus a very sought-after duty (it was also usually given to men who had earned a promotion.) It is possible that the same tradition was practiced in the Navy, and this might account for some of William's happiness.
