    Note 1: (procuring a divorce)

    Getting a divorce in Regency England was not a very easy thing. The only grounds upon which one could apply for a divorce, was infidelity on the part of the wife--Mr. Rushworth had no difficulty in proving this point. In addition, a man could get a divorce, but a woman could not. The legal process was not an easy or a cheap one, and required nothing less than an act of Parliament to achieve.
