Common Errors:
Back to Plurals and Possessives!

Possessives (that is Ann's car), usually take an apostrophe. The exception is Possessive Pronouns which do not! (its, his, hers, theirs, ours, whose, etc.)

Examples:

"What is its name?" Jane asked the dog's owner.
"Whose dog is that?" Jane asked her neighbor.
"Is that snow shovel ours or yours?" Jane asked her neighbor.

With words like its/it's, whose/who's, you only use the apostrophe, when you can substitute the words "it is" or "who is". In other words the apostrophe is only used as a contraction, not to denote a possessive.

It is a lovely day. = It's a lovely day.
Its engine died yesterday. = It is Its engine died yesterday.
